There is nothing like taking your own daughter for a drive in her first truck. Try it when she is eager. That's the key to having her complete attention. What we didn't expect we worked through and laughed as we did go along. She wanted to trade vehicles before leaving for college. Daddy, I want a truck. Nick taught me how to drive a stick shift. I drove his cousins. Sure enough. She did drive it.
What was I thinking, as we were headed to the car lot, vehicle lot since they had vans and trucks, too. It wasn't until we got into the car, oops, truck, as a matter of fact, the black Nissan Hardbody, we traded my Dodge Caravan in for, when I suddenly remembered, she had only really driven a stick shift once before. It only took five minutes of stop, go, stop, go, before she peeled of out of the car lot. That's when I really started to worry. What was next? Well, she didn't think ahead, press the gas pedal and drive through the yellow light. No, instead, she slowed down and realized she had her first time, in traffice, to start from first gear and drive along.
One tantrum, scream, then crying jag, and she confidently was handling first, then second, then third gear, and on and on. Wow! How smooth! How confident! I wrote those things down as a parent, for one of her high school teachers, as a soon to be graduating Senior, just two months ago. Yes! She was doing it. And she did a great job, too.
She is going to be some cool student, as she drives on campus for her new experience this fall, college. And, she is ready for it. Now open those eyes and lets go for a ride. Great job Lizzi.
